The Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team hits the road for the first time on the young season Friday when they travel to Mediapolis. SK was on the wrong end of a 54-14 game at the Snake Pit a week ago against top five in Class 2A Prairie City Monroe. The Cobras trailed 14-0 after one and 34-7 at the break. They were outgained 412-262 in total including 276-193 on the ground. SK gave up 10 tackles for loss and committed a pair of turnovers. Isaac Bruns rushed for a 17 yard score and Jacob Libe threw a touchdown to Ayden Galindo on a 55 yard completion. Jace Chalupa led the defense with five stops, one for loss. The Cobras have nine All-District performers back from last year’s team that finished 8-2.

Mediapolis is 1-0 after rolling by Columbus 42-19. The Bulldogs led 21-0 after one and 35-7 at  half. They outgained the Wildcats 455-265 in total including 266-135 on the ground. MEPO piled up eight tackles for loss and forced four Columbus turnovers. Quarterback Reese Campbell accounted for 194 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, two on the ground in the win. He tossed a touchdown to Alton Wonderlich. Noah Schmidgall also ran for two scores. Wonderlich and Payton Johnson each had four tackles. Wonderlich also had a fumble recovery and Johnson a pick. Connor Schulz and Parker Lange added interceptions. On the KCII Radio Coaches Corner, SK head coach Jared Jensen talked about his takeaways from Week 1 against PCM and how his team can bounce back tonight.

Jensen said, “Our kids battled PCM all night long. That’s a championship calibre 2A team. We’re preparing ourselves with really talented Class 2A playoff teams these first three weeks of the season to get that important experience. That’s going to set us up for success in district play and the stretch run and that’s what we are focused on this week against MEPO.”

These teams have split their last eight games, with SK winning three in a row including a 21-0 victory at the Snake Pit in 2023, where Isaac Bruns had 131 rushing yards, a touchdown and an interception. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Mediapolis High School.
