Local volleyball teams stayed busy Thursday night. The WACO Warriors would take two of the three matches at a quadrangular they hosted in Wayland. After sweeping Cardinal, 25-13 and 25-16, WACO dropped both sets to Fairfield, 25-12 and 25-16, but they would bounce back against New London.

The Warriors took the opening frame 25-18, and after falling to the Tigers in the second set 25-21, they would claim a tight final set 15-10. Sophomore Carlee Lunsford had four aces in the match and would lead WACO with eight total kills for the night.

Drew Graber had two kills, four digs, three blocked shots and three aces against New London, while fellow sophomore Brenna Graber came up with a total of six kills, 14 digs, two blocks and three aces for the evening.

Senior Ella Huisenga added seven kills, 16 digs and three aces in the three matches, while sophomore setter Kinsey Hildebrand handed out 18 assists to go with three aces and 18 digs as the Warriors raise their record to 3-5.

Meanwhile, the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves got a win while playing in a quad at Lisbon, as WMU beat East Buchanan in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-17. The Wolves would also take the first set against the hosting Lions 21-16, but they would fall in the last two frames to the 13th-ranked team in Class 2A, 21-14 and 15-8.

Despite the defeat, freshman middle hitter Kynlee Buffington still had a team-high nine kills for Winfield-Mount Union. Senior Josie Nelson added five kills and two aces against Lisbon as the Wolves’ record early in the season is now at 3-1. Both WMU and WACO are playing in the English Valleys Tournament this weekend.
