The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks picked up another win on the volleyball court last night by taking down the Washington Demons in straight sets on the road.
Mid-Prairie responded to being tied at five in the first set with a 14-3 run to go in front, and the Golden Hawks would stay there on their way to a 25-10 victory.
Another big 11-5 run in the second broke up a set that was tied at nine, and while Washington used a 7-2 run to tie the second frame late, the Hawks would score the final three points to win it 25-22.
A 7-1 run to open the third and final set would set the stage for Mid-Prairie to claim it 25-18 and take the match. The victory means that the sixth-ranked team in the state in Class 2A improves its record to 11-2.
Washington was coming off losing three of the fourth matches that they played Saturday at a tournament in Anamosa. The Demons swept Northeast, winning each set by a score of 21-15, but they would lose in straight sets to the hosting Blue Raiders, 21-18 and 21-13.
Washington bounced back from dropping the first set 21-13 to Dubuque Hempstead by taking the second 21-19, but they dropped the tiebreaker set 15-12 and would end up getting swept by Bellevue (Illinois), 21-9 and 21-12.
Junior Leighton Messinger led the Demons with 24 kills and 20 digs for the tournament while also coming up with three blocks, four assists and a serving ace.
Senior Ella Greiner had 16 kills, 19 digs and a team-high seven aces, while junior Taylor Miksch put up 15 kills and nine digs and Layla Green posted 11 kills and six blocks in the middle.
Fellow sophomore Ellie Farmer added four aces and 20 digs, while senior setter Lauren Hinrichsen dealt out 58 assists to go with three kills and 22 digs. Washington’s record now sits at 5-7, but they’ll have a chance to improve on it and go to 2-0 in conference play when they play again tonight at home against Burlington.
