U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke with KCII News about the change in National Security since the 9/11 attacks, “Well I think securing the border helps us in many ways. It keeps out the fentanyl that kills 70,000 people every year. It keeps out the child trafficking, the human trafficking. We have people with criminal records coming to our country. It’s all very scary. And 8 to 10 million people have come here that has caused problems in housing, medical care all of those sort of things.”  Following 9/11, the federal government developed a security framework to protect the country from large-scale attacks directed from abroad, while enhancing federal, state, and local capabilities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from threats and disasters at home. A key element of this framework included the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in March, 2003, bringing together 22 separate agencies and offices into a single, Cabinet-level department.
