The Highland Huskies edged the conference rival Lone Tree Lions in a five-set volleyball thriller Tuesday night. Lone Tree took the first set on their home floor 25-19, but Highland would bounce back to claim the next two sets 25-13 and 25-11.

The Lions would extend the match by winning a tight fourth frame 25-22, but the Huskies would finish off a victory by taking the tie-breaking fifth set 15-6.

Junior middle hitter Brenna Hazelett led Highland with 13 kills, while sophomore Hailey Brun affected all areas of the game with nine kills, nine digs and two serving aces for the Huskies.

Junior teammate Adisyn Prottsman also had nine kills and picked up three aces, while senior Adeline Krotz collected an impressive eight aces to go with eight kills, five digs and a blocked shot.

Setter Laney Skelton was also an all-around force for Highland. In addition to handing out 34 assists, the senior put up four kills, 13 digs, five aces and a block to help the Huskies improve to 2-0 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 5-3 overall.

Avery Morarie had a team-high seven kills for Lone Tree, while fellow senior Cate Sexton had a strong night in the middle with six kills and six blocked shots.

Junior Alyson Ford added four kills and four blocks for the Lions, while teammate Alex Dautremont came up with five kills and 15 digs and fellow senior Hayden Yoder added two blocks to the 20 assists she distributed.

The loss drops Lone Tree to 4-5 in total and 0-2 in the Super Conference North. While the Lions next play Hillcrest Academy later tonight, Highland will take on Louisa-Muscatine this evening in Riverside.
