Week Three of the high school football season is here, and with it comes a chance for the Washington Demons to get off to their best start to a season in four years.

Washington welcomes conference rival Fairfield to town tonight in a game you can hear on KCII, with the Demons looking to start the season 3-0. It hasn’t been easy, with both games against Oskaloosa and Burlington being one-score wins that required stopping potential game-tying drives in the final minute of play.

Still, the Washington defense has stood tall, yielding only 20 total points in the two wins and allowing just under an average of 210 yards per game. Defensive lineman Brady Krantz has been a game-wrecker for the Demons with two-and-a-half sacks, while fellow sophomore Blaine Rees leads the team in total tackles.

On offense, despite not quite piling up the points just yet, Washington has been efficient. Starting quarterback Logan McDole leads the Southeast Conference by completing 75 percent of his pass attempts on his way to throwing for over 240 yards and three touchdowns.

Fellow senior Jayfred Espinosa has been his top target, hauling in two of those TDs and picking up nine total catches for just over 100 yards.

The Demons made plenty of big plays in last year’s matchup with Fairfield, but it wasn’t quite enough to avoid a 23-20 loss, one that head coach Kelly Williams tells KCII Sports has been fueling his team all throughout the off-season.

“It’s a game that kind of ate [at] me throughout the winter,” Williams says. “But we’re going to have to focus more on the Demons than what the Trojans are doing. They definitely did some nice things against Fort Madison, so they’re off to a good start as well.”

Indeed, Fairfield bounced back from a one-point defeat to Mount Pleasant by rolling past Fort Madison 55-15 last week.

Senior Luke Konczal leads the Southeast Conference in rushing with 225 yards and nearly 10 yards per carry, while Trojan sophomore Zandrik Allison has also been a threat with the ball in his hands, running for over 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Last year’s defeat ended an 11-game win streak in the series for Washington. The Demons duel with Fairfield once more this evening on their home turf, and you can hear all the action from Case Field on 106.1 FM KCII, as well as streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app. Coverage begins with the HOMEgirl Realty Pregame Show at 7 o’clock.
