U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley spoke to KCII News about the start of the harvest season and his message to farmers and the public, “It’s one of the most dangerous parts of the whole year for farmers. Getting the crop out of the ground. Transporting it to the farm or to the local elevator. It’s very dangerous, so be very very cautious. But that is also kind of a lesson to non-farmers in Iowa, when you see a farmer on the Highway with his machinery, be cautious.” In Iowa, some farmers begin harvesting corn by mid-September, though most of the harvest takes place in October. In a cool year, when the corn matures more slowly, much of Iowa’s crop isn’t harvested until November.
