For the first time in the 2024 football season, the Lone Tree Lions are set to step into the Area Game of the Week spotlight, as they take on the Springville Orioles tonight in Lone Tree in a game you can hear on the KCII3 Stream.

Lone Tree sits at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in district play after last Friday’s road victory against Midland. Junior Emmett Burke went 11/19 through the air for a monster 325 yards and four touchdowns. Burke also proved he was a threat with his legs, rushing for 91 yards and two more scores. Senior Maddox Jondle also had a big night, rushing 25 times for 166 yards and two scores. Junior Domonic Garcia hauled in seven passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Jondle had eight-and-a-half tackles while Jack Patterson and McKoy Boardman combined for two fumble recoveries. As a team, Lone Tree puts up 37.3 points-per-game and gives up 38.7. The Lions are 23/43 passing for 526 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. Their 108 carries have tallied 688 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, the Lions have 97 tackles, four sacks, 12-and-a-half tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries and three picks. On special teams, Lone Tree is 8/13 on PAT’s.

The other side of the matchup sees a Springville team that is 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play after a win against Easton Valley last week. Mason Hoy completed his only pass to Jace March for 56 yards, and finished as the leading rusher, tallying 139 yards on 13 carries, finding the end zone thrice. Luke Lansing had eight-and-a-half tackles, four-and-a-half sacks, and four-and-a-half tackles for loss, while teammates Hoy, Connor Williams, Isaac Hill, Oliver Longerbeam, and March all combined to rack up six total turnovers defensively. As a team, Springville puts up 40.5 points-per-game and gives up 28.3. They are 10/31 through the air for 156 yards and two touchdowns paired with three interceptions. The Orioles have taken flight on the ground this season, racking up 909 yards on 134 carries for 17 touchdowns. Defensively, the Orioles have recorded 183 tackles, seven sacks, 22 tackles-for-loss, eight fumble recoveries including a scoop-and-score, and five picks that have seen two go to the house. The Orioles own one kickoff return touchdown and are 18/20 on PAT’s this season.

Lone Tree Head Coach Joe Donovan joined us on the KCII Radio Coaches Corner this past Saturday to preview their matchup with Springville. “Springville, I don’t know much about them to be honest. I have watched very little film about them, but I know their quarterback is pretty good. I think right now where we’re at, our issues are with ourselves and our team. We’ve just got to clean up our mistakes. The good thing is that we haven’t played a perfect game, so we definitely have a lot of room for improvement,” Donovan said.

In the Varsity Bound era, Lone Tree leads the all-time series 3-0 between these two teams dating back to 2016. Last year’s matchup saw Lone Tree snag a dominating 47-14 victory on September 15th.
