The Washington Demons and the Columbus Wildcats put together brilliant efforts Thursday at the Timm Lamb Cross Country Invitational in Fort Madison.
Washington won the Class A boys’ team championship, finishing with a score of 25 that was 23 points lower than second-place Muscatine, and the Demons were second on the girls’ side, only 13 points away from catching Fort Madison for the team title.
Meanwhile, Columbus edged out Van Buren County to take the Class B boys’ team crown, as their team score of 60 was only a single point better than VBC.
Washington’s big day was led by having both individual champions in the Class A division. Junior Iris Dahl won her second straight race for the Demons with a time of 19 minutes 45 seconds, while senior Tyler Alderton picked up his first career victory, crossing the finish line in 16 minutes 53 seconds.
Alderton only beat his junior teammate Andrew Rees by four seconds, while junior Sawyer Tschantz clocked in at 17:45 to finish fifth.
Sophomore Ethan Hotchkiss and freshman Parker Tschantz both had times of just over 18 minutes to take the last two spots in the top 10, while senior Jace Sanders, junior Ivan Rangel and sophomore Fletcher Bower also all ran top-30 times for the Washington boys.
Lauren Horak put up a time of 20:39 in the girls’ race to finish fourth in Class A for the Demons, while fellow senior Alyvia Anderson took 10th in 21:29 and senior Quincy Griffis was one spot and 15 seconds behind her.
Kendall Hinrichsen was 14th and was joined by fellow senior Isabella Lujan and juniors Angeline Anderson and Isobel Murphy inside the top 25.
Columbus’ team victory in the boys’ Class B division was led by senior Ty Muniz finishing fourth overall in 17:07 and sophomore Ryan Villa taking ninth in 18:16.
Wildcat sophomore Cade Storm and freshman Elias Gonzalez Bravo both found themselves in the top 15, while senior Bryan Tlatenchi finished 20th and sophomores Drake Marin and Juan Alcala also put up top-30 times. Junior Isabel Rendon led the Columbus girls by finishing 13th.
Winfield-Mount Union also took part in the Class B races at Rodeo Park Trail and were paced by senior Kohlby Newsom running an eighth-place time 18:14 on the boys’ side, while freshman Ashlyn Bender represented the Wolves in the girls’ run and was clocked at just over 28 minutes.
Sigourney was also in action Thursday at the Lynnville-Sully Invitational. Junior Addison Yates led the Savage girls by finishing fifth overall in just under 22:37.
Freshman Brynn Clarahan was one spot and and nine seconds behind her, while junior Ellie Yates was eighth in 22:53. Junior Troy Klett was also seventh in the boys’ race in 19:14.
