The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team scored their second straight victory of the season Friday, making a statement, with a 48-3 pounding of Davis County at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman. The Hawks took the ball to start, and Golden Hawk gridiron standout Hudson Ehrenfelt promptly took it to the house, from 42 yards out, capping an eight play, 77-yard march to put Mid-Prairie on top 7-0. After a defensive stop and a 54 yard punt return by Kaden Kos, the first play of the next possession went to Ehrenfelt and he was into the end zone again, from 24 yards out, to double the lead. The Mustangs went three and out on their second possession and snapped the ball over the punter’s head into the end zone for a safety and halfway though the first, the Hawks led 16-0. The Mustangs got their only points of the night on their next possession, as the Davis County drive covered 66 yards on 12 plays, finishing with a Landon Fetcho 26-yard field goal to make it 16-3 Hawks. From there, Mid-Prairie poured it on. The Golden Hawks final three offensive possessions of the half were all finished with Ehrenfelt scoring runs of 80, seven and 35 yards to give him five touchdown runs before intermission, and the Golden Hawks a 36-3 lead.

Out of the break, the Mid-Prairie defense stopped the Mustangs again and the Golden Hawks went to the air. Brady Weber was a perfect six of six on an 80-yard, 12 play drive, connecting with Cobi Hershberger for the final 20 on a touchdown throw to enact the running clock and go up 42-3. The Hawks finished the scoring with a 10-play, 71-yard drive and Ehrenfelt’s sixth scoring run of the night, a four yarder, to go up 48-3. The jaw-dropping performance from the Mid-Prairie junior ties the school record of six touchdowns in a single game, a mark he shares with Golden Hawk greats Seth Fisher, Travis Kern and Tanner Miller. Ehrenfelt, Mr. Touchdown, spoke with KCII Sports on the locker room show after the game about how everything came together.

Ehrenfelt said, “A night like this feels great. The first thing I look for is how well the blockers get out in front of me. I’m usually patient, but, if there’s a hole I can get through, I’m going to shoot the gap and get the yards that I can. (The offensive line) was amazing! The guys they were going against were big, most of them were probably bigger than our guys. They did an amazing job and that’s the result you’re going to get. (My favorite touchdown) was the fourth or fifth, I made a cut-back to the back side and I was gone. It’s amazing getting in the endzone. (These two wins) have been great. I feel like we’ve got our spark. We’ve had two great weeks of practice and it’s really shown. We are showing what we can do on offense and defense, we have a lot of playmakers, and we’re putting all of the pieces together.”

He finished with 311 all-purpose yards on 23 touches with six touchdowns, 302 yards on the ground on 22 carries, the second highest rush yard total in a game in Mid-Prairie history. That effort was part a 519 total yard outburst for the Mid-Prairie offense. Davis County finished with 250. Weber was 10 of 15 through the air for 145 yards and a touchdown. Hershberger hauled in the scoring throw, making five total catches for 60 yards. He added seven tackles and a fumble recovery on defense. Kaden Kos finished with nine tackles for the Hawks. Davis County was led by Cason Young’s 40 touches for 190 all-purpose yards. The Golden Hawks are now 2-0, leading 2A District 5, and 2-3 overall, Davis County is 0-2 in district play and 3-2 on the year. The Hawks travel to Mediapolis next week, the Mustangs visit Albia.
