Week Six of the high school football season is here, and the Washington Demons will spend it looking to spoil the homecoming celebration of a long-time rival when they travel to Mount Pleasant tonight in a game you can hear on KCII.

Washington’s resounding 35-0 win over Keokuk in their homecoming game continued what is turning into an excellent season. A win in their Class 3A District 4 opener last week has the Demons at 4-1 and still unbeaten against their Southeast Conference rivals.

A dominant defense continues to carry Washington, allowing less than 16 points and 240 yards per game. The Demons also have 10 total takeaways and are leading or second in the district in tackles for loss and sacks.

The defensive line in particular has shined for the Demons, with Keider Gomez-Valdez collecting nine-and-a-half tackles for loss and three sacks off the edge and fellow senior Summit Keith piling up 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in the middle.

Junior Rudy Wolfe has also been a force in the interior with seven total stops for loss, while sophomore end Brady Krantz leads the team with four sacks and eight tackles for loss.

Senior Jude Carter leads Washington in total tackles, but fellow linebacker Blaine Rees flashed his potential with a huge game against Keokuk, putting up nine total stops, 2.5 sacks and recovering a fumble for one of the Demons’ five takeaways against the Chiefs.

The offense has gotten efficient playmaking from senior quarterback Logan McDole, who is completing over 67 percent of his pass attempts and has accounted for eight touchdowns.

Junior Kael Williams has also had some big games at running back, rushing for nearly 390 yards and five TDs. Head Kelly Williams tells KCII Sports that a lot is working well for his team, but they cannot overlook this week’s matchup with Mount Pleasant.

“They’re coming,” Williams says. “They’re getting better each week [and] we know that they’ll be tough.”

After the Demons’ rivals had suffered back-to-back winless seasons coming into this year, the Panthers have won twice in 2024, including a 33-24 victory over Tipton in their last home game two weeks ago.

Mount Pleasant has one of the best two-way players in the Southeast Conference in senior Payton Walker, who has over 260 yards from scrimmage on offense and leads the defense in tackles.

Washington’s 42-7 victory over Mount Pleasant last season marked their 13th straight in the series.
