The No. 8 in Class 1A Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team kept a couple of streaks alive Friday in their dominant 62-26 win at Colfax-Mingo, marking their sixth consecutive victory this season and bringing home their fifth straight district championship. The Cobras cruised all night, putting up 19 in the first quarter including a 71-yard Isaac Bruns touchdown run on their first play from scrimmage and a special teams score when Landon Conrad picked up a blocked field goal and ran it back 94-yards for six. The second quarter was more of the same on 30 total points including Bruns finding the end zone from nine yards out, Braydon Wood throwing a 17 yard TD pass to Bruns, then running a 37 yarder in himself. The Cobras led 49-12 at half and put it away from there, scoring 13 in the second half with the Tigerhawks adding two scores in the fourth quarter. This week on the KCII Radio Coaches Corner, SK head coach Jared Jensen broke down the win.

Jensen said, “We were efficient in the running game. We got things going up front and were able to get the edge and exploit some things up the middle. We opened it up and threw the ball a little more this week. Their front seven were a little outmatched. We were able to build off of what we have been able to do the last few weeks. Isaac (Bruns) had another big night. We’re hitting our stride offensively and getting some other guys involved. Guys up front on both sides are playing at a high level. Communication is good and people are doing their jobs.”

The Cobras won the total yards battle 489 to 422 including 383 to 26 on the ground, averaging 15 yards per carry, and winning the turnover battle 3-0. Bruns finished with four touchdowns and 164 yards on just six carries. Jacob Libe, Wood and Chase Clarahan added ground touchdowns. Bruns hauled in Wood’s lone passing touchdown in his four of five night for 94 yards. Aidan Greiner led the defense with five tackles. Conrad had a fumble recovery. Chase Haifley and John Berg each had picks. Shane Hostetter led Colfax-Mingo’s offense, going 18 of 26 passing for 396 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. The Cobras are the district champions for the fifth straight year and enter week 8 at 6-1, riding a six-game winning streak, while the Tigerhawks fall to 1-6.
