Local runners took the course Thursday at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Wapello for the annual Mike Jay Invitational. Among the top teams were the Columbus Wildcats, who finished fourth in team scoring on the boys’ side and were seventh as a girls’ team.
Senior Ty Muniz led the Columbus boys by taking second place overall with a time of 16 minutes 43 seconds. Cade Storm finished 15th for the Wildcats, while freshman Elias Gonzalez Bravo and fellow sophomores Ryan Villa and Drake Marin also ran top-25 times.
Sophomore Juan Alcala and freshmen Alan Miranda and Victor Tovar also made the top 50 for the Columbus boys, while sophomore Iris Garza led the Wildcat girls with a fourth-place time of 20 minutes 56 seconds and junior Isabel Rendon was 15th overall.
WACO’s Josie Dykstra was not far behind Garza, as the freshman was fourth in the girls’ race by crossing the finish line in 21:04. Warriors senior Elyssa Graber also had a top-25 time.
Lone Tree was eighth in the girls’ team standings and was paced by freshman Addyson Eiben, who was 21st overall. Senior Vivian Zaruba also made the top 40 for the Lions, while sophomore Brock Nebergall was also 21st in the boys’ race.
Winfield-Mount Union had a ninth-place finish in the boys’ team competition, led by senior Kohlby Newsom taking fifth individually by clocking in at 17:04. Junior Brayden Zywiec’s time of just over 22 minutes led the Highland boys, while senior Olivia Edwards ran for the Huskies in the girls’ race and had a time of 32:41.
