The Washington Demons can now call themselves conference champions after winning the Southeast Conference Tournament last night with a pair of victories in Burlington.

Washington started the night by defeating Keokuk in straight sets. The Demons used an impressive 16-2 run to rally from an early deficit in the first set and take an 18-7 lead, and after the won the opening frame 25-14, Washington started the second set on a 7-2 run and would lead by as much as 11 points on their way to winning the set 25-16.

The final match of the tournament was against top seed and host Burlington, who had beaten the Demons in straight sets earlier in the season. Washington came out of the gates ready to go in Round Two, using a 7-2 run to take a 13-11 lead in the first set.

The Grayhounds would close the opening frame on a 14-8 run to win it 25-21. But that would not deter the Demons. Washington played some of their best volleyball of the season to open up a commanding 18-6 lead in the second frame and would win the set 25-14.

The match came down to a tie-breaking third set, and Washington was ready, racing out to a 7-1 lead. Burlington countered with a 6-1 run to get back within a point, but the Demons would not be denied, finishing the match on a 7-3 run to win the final set 15-10.

With the victory, Washington goes 9-1 in league play and wins a Southeast Conference title in volleyball for the first time in the 21st century. The Demons are also now 16-15 overall as they prepare to wrap up the regular season tomorrow night with a match at Columbus.
