The Columbus Wildcats will try to carry over their recent success on the football field when they head to Danville tonight for their final game of the regular season.

Three straight wins has Columbus not only at 4-3 but also 4-2 in Class A District 5, securing a berth in the state playoffs. But a win this evening could also improve their seeding, as they currently sit tied with Danville for third place in the district.

The Wildcats’ turnaround has been powered in part by their offense exploding to score at least 48 points in each of the last three games. Senior Riley Kaalberg has run wild during the winning streak, piling up nearly 500 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in that span to raise his season totals to over 1,000 yards and 14 TDs on the ground.

Quarterback Trevor Phillips has been efficient, completing nearly 68 percent of his pass attempts over 500 yards and nine scores, while fellow junior Tyson Kaalberg has caught four of those scoring tosses and has over 470 total yards from scrimmage.

On defense, Columbus is starting to put it all together, allowing only 21 total points in their three-game win streak. Junior Drew Totemeier leads the team in total tackles, while sophomore Lamar Ceant has three interceptions and is dangerous with the ball in his hands, returning both a pick and a kick for a touchdown in the last three weeks.

The Wildcats will be taking on a Danville team with an identical 4-2 record in district play and 4-3 overall mark. QB Jaden Bauers has been excellent for the Bears, throwing for nearly 1,400 yards and 10 TDs while also leading the team in rushing.

Fellow senior Kessler Whaley is Bauers’ favorite target, catching 33 passes for nearly 670 yards and seven scores. Columbus downed Danville 63-18 year and hopes for something similar this evening, starting with kickoff from Danville at 7 o’clock.
