Week Eight of the high school football season has arrived, and the Washington Demons will try to make their last home game of the fall a good one when they welcome state-ranked Mount Vernon to Case Field in a district game you can hear on KCII.

Washington suffered a setback last week to what’s been a solid season by taking a 34-6 loss at Davenport Assumption, dropping them to 2-1 in Class 3A District 4 and 5-2 overall.

Linebacker Jude Carter is coming off a huge game with 14-and-a-half total tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Carter joins fellow senior Summit Keith and sophomore Blaine Rees in having more than 40 stops each for a Washington team that gives up only a little more than 19 points per game.

The defensive front has wrecked havoc on opponents to help the Demons to the third-most tackles for loss in the state, including a combined 17 sacks from Carter, Keith, Rees, senior Keider Gomez Valdez, sophomore Brady Krantz and juniors Rudy Wolfe and Josue Jara.

Washington has also leaned on an efficient offense, with quarterback Logan McDole completing nearly 65 percent of his pass attempts for over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Fellow senior Mason Morgan has been the big-play threat at receiver with 18 catches for over 430 yards and three TDs, but he was held without a catch last Friday.

The normally-stout Demon defense is also looking to bounce back at home after yielding 300 rushing yards to Assumption. Demons head coach Kelly Williams tells KCII Sports that both players and coaches have to be better this week.

“I’ve got to go back to the drawing board and see what I can do to put our players in a better position,” William says. “Mount Vernon [will] be able to run it or pass it. We’ve got another big test.”

Seventh-ranked Mount Vernon comes to town with a 6-1 record, having won all three of their district games by at least 30 points and only losing to number-11 Solon.

In addition to being the highest scoring-team in the district, the Mustangs own one of the state’s most dominant defenses, leading Class 3A in tackles for loss and sacks while surrendering a measly average of only about 7.5 points and 165 yards per contest.

Washington lost at Mount Vernon last season 65-6. This season’ addition of the Demons against the Mustangs will come your way this evening on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app, starting with the HOMEgirl Realty Pregame Show at 7 o’clock.
