The Washington Demons capped off a brilliant regular season of cross country with a number of victories Thursday at this year’s Southeast Conference Championships at Elks Fairview Golf Course in Keokuk.
The Washington boys won an impressive fourth straight team conference title, using a team score of 28 to edge out Fort Madison by five points, while the Demons also produced an individual conference champ in junior Andrew Rees, who ran the top boys’ time of 16 minutes 23 seconds to become the fifth straight Washington runner to win the boys’ conference crown.
Senior teammate Tyler Alderton was second to Rees by crossing the finish line in 16 minutes 49 seconds, while Washington freshman Parker Tschantz took sixth place by clocking at 17:19.
Sophomore Ethan Hotchkiss was ninth in 17:39 and junior Sawyer Tschantz was 10th in 17:39 to join Alderton, Rees and Parker Tschantz in earning all-conference honors.
Freshman Teague Miller finished 15th for the Demons and senior Jace Sanders, junior Ivan Rangel and sophomore Fletcher Brower also ran top-25 times.
The Washington girls would not be able to win a fourth straight team conference championship as well, finishing runner-up to Fort Madison, but they did have the individual conference winner.
Junior Iris Dahl won her third straight conference medal with a victorious time of 19 minutes 32 seconds. Seniors Lauren Horak and Kendall Hinrichsen also earned all-conference accolades, with Horak finishing eighth in 20:34 and Hinrichsen taking 10th in 20:42.
Alyvia Anderson was squeezed in between them, and by taking ninth place in 20:38, she became the first Demon girl since 2000 to be an all-conference runner in four straight years.
Sophomore Emma Horak; juniors Angeline Anderson and Isobel Murphy; and seniors Quincy Griffis and Isabella Lujan also had top-25 times for Washington, which now prepares for state qualifying that will take place at a Class 3A district meet this coming Wednesday in Pella.
