The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves started the volleyball playoffs by defeating the Lone Tree Lions last night in the first round of the Class 1A Region 2 tournament.

WMU won the first set 25-21, and while Lone Tree took the second 25-23, Winfield-Mount Union controlled the rest of the match, winning the next two frames 25-13 and 25-10. Junior Kellee Milks led the Wolves with 19 kills and also had 14 digs and two serving aces.

Freshman Kynlee Buffington added 12 kills, while senior Josie Nelson had seven kills, six aces and a team-high 27 digs. Junior Quin Smith added six kills and three aces, while senior Pacey Schlee had an ace and 17 digs to help WMU improve to 13-10 and advance to the Region 2 quarterfinals Wednesday against Holy Trinity Catholic.

Meanwhile, the season ends for Lone Tree with a record of 8-18. The Lions will now say goodbye to eight seniors, including Rylee Shield, Avery Morarie, Cate Sexton, Haley Bockelman, Hayden Yoder, Alex Dautremont, Sami Branson and Madison Floyd.
