Good Morning. Good Afternoon. Good Night. The No. 8 in Class 3A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk volleyball team made quick work of visiting Davis County Tuesday night in the opening round of the Class 3A Regional tournament, sending the Mustangs packing in straight sets. The Hawks were winners by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-11. After the match, Golden Hawk junior Avery Helmuth and senior Kyla Karnes talked on the KCII Postgame show about what led them to victory.
Helmuth said, “We had good connections and confidence throughout the match. We all tried, and played one of our best games ever. The play’s not over until the ball hits the floor, so trusting my teammates to get a good swing every time and it works out. I thought we ran really fast tempo and all of our hitters were an option and available at all times. Our defense was good too. I could run anything.”
Karnes continued, “(The home atmosphere) is great. We have a student section, all of our fans. Our defense played well, coverage was good. We just played as a team tonight. We have seven (Seniors) so, our leadership is good. We’re talking all the time, bringing the team together. Thursday we just have to play our game, business as usual, keep calm and we’ll do it our way. It’s on baby! Home house!”
Statistical leaders for the Hawks included 10 assists for Helmuth, Jovi Evans had nine digs, eight kills, seven assists and four aces. Dakota Mitchell added nine digs, Jeorgia Evans five kills, four aces each for Mitchell and Katelyn Harland and four blocks for Callie Huber. The win moves Mid-Prairie to 31-8, tying the school record for victories in a season. Davis County ends their year at 11-26. The Golden Hawks advance to Thursday’s 3A Regional Semifinal where they host Albia.
