Latinos for Washington, Inc. announced the successful completion of its volunteer-led citizenship class last week. The purpose of the course is to help students prepare for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Test. Over the past five weeks, volunteers helped guide students through American civics, English reading and writing, the application process, and general exam preparation. After the conclusion of the course, all students participated in mock interviews to prepare for their citizenship interview and test. The 90-minute classes met three times per week at the Washington Public Library. The classes were co-taught by former Washington teacher Kerrie Willis and Fairfield teacher Jake Engle. Students who attended all class sessions and passed their mock exam were awarded a scholarship for the full cost of their citizenship application fee. The scholarship is funded by multiple generous donors from the community. The organization is planning on offering another course this spring.
