This fall, Ankeny Centennial High School hosted the 31st annual Washburn Classic, the Iowa Middle School State cross country meet.

The top area performances for southeast Iowa came from Class 1A. The top individual was WACO’s Macie Carter who was fourth in the 1A girls competition with a time of 12:42. Ava Witt of Saint Ansgar was the individual champion in 12:05. Other area runners in the race included Sigourney’s Jayde Snakenberg 71st and Winfield-Mt. Union’s Baylie Heacock 118th.

Top team performance came from the 1A boys race where the Hillcrest Academy Ravens were fifth with 132 points. South Winneshiek won the team title with 47. The Ravens were led by Calvin Meller third overall in 11:28. Landon Thayer of Logan-Magnolia was the individual champ in 10:50. Other Raven runners included Jaxson Brokaw 13th, Simon Willems 45th, Evan Slaubaugh 71st, Troy Yoder 76th and Merle Cronquist 85th. The Columbus Wildcats were eighth as a team with 161 points. Top Cat was Kevin Villa 10th in 11:56. Other Columbus competitors included Silas Falk 36th, Elias Duran 37th and James Sang 78th. Individually, Sigourney’s Brody Seeley was 42nd in 13:06, followed by teammate Cole Klett 47th with WACO’s Hunter Wilson 43rd.

In Class 3A, the Washington boys sent a pair of runners with Jack Shepherd taking sixth in 11:14 and Hudson Turner 65th. Luke McCormick of Des Moines Christian was the winner in 10:19.

In Class 2A, the Mid-Prairie boys were ninth as a team with 136 points, Denver won the team title with 30 points. The Hawks were led by Jacob Lothamer 18th in 12:47. Heston Hinders of Garner-Hayfield was the overall winner in 11:09. Other Golden Hawks included Archie Damschen 26th, Landon Hough 45th, Andrew Adam 47th and Jackson Rodgers 72nd.

The Mid-Prairie girls were 14th in the 2A team race with 207 points. Tipton won the title with 29. Nikkari Poll led the Golden Hawk girls in 31st in 14:09. Mary Grace Lyons of Monticello was the overall winner in 11:49. Other Mid-Prairie runners included Leah Kelley 55th, Audrey Huber 60th, Coral Sanchez Vera 61st, Stella Miller 63rd and Emma Droll 66th.
