The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team gets the new year underway tonight when they travel to Eldridge and North Scott High School for the Lancer Invitational.
Last season the Golden Hawks finished with a 6-5 team dual record. They finished third as a team at the River Valley Conference Championships with three individual runners-up including Austyn Sexton, Ashlee Farrier and Ellie Brenneman. Three Hawks qualified for the State Tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Farrier, Brenneman and Ellie Callahan. Each of those individuals had their hand raised at least once while on the mat at State.
While veterans Brenneman, Sam Stacey and Gabi Robertson departed after graduation, the Hawks still return State qualifiers Farrier and Callahan who combined on 56 wins a season ago, alongside 20 match winners from last year Sexton and Mardie Berry, and competitors who finished .500 or better, Becca Westfall, Emmerson Moore, Emma Creed, and Addyson Asher. The Hawks will also be under the direction of first year head coach Brock Moore, who has served with the program in previous seasons. Moore spoke this week with KCII Sports about what has him most excited for the upcoming year, the program’s goals for the season.
Moore said, “We have strong upperclassmen coming in, and I want them to finish strong. (Our job) is to get the girls who were at State back to State and then give two or three other girls a boost up there. At the same time, I’m still focused on keeping those freshmen and build them up so that when they become juniors and seniors they are competing at a high level as well.”
Joining the Golden Hawks tonight are Davenport Assumption, Central DeWitt, Clinton, Western Dubuque, Muscatine and the home Lancers. Action starts at 5:15 and continues into the evening in Eldridge.
