The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves are getting set to tip off a new boys’ basketball season after one of the best in school history.

WMU went 21-3 last winter on their way to not only winning the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference, but they danced all the way to the Class 1A state semifinals, their first trip to the state tournament since 1996.

While most of the starting lineup from last year’s senior-laden squad has since graduated, Winfield-Mount Union does bring back starting point guard Jake Edwards.

The now-senior averaged nearly 11 points, three rebounds, three-and-a-half assists and 2.5 steals per game last season on his way to second-team All-Super Conference North honors.

Wolves head coach Klay Edwards tells KCII Sports that the rest of the roster will need to get up to speed, but they have the physical capabilities to make up their learning curve.

“Looking at the roster,” Edwards says, “I think we’ll actually be bigger this year than we were last year, which is kind of surprising. We’re hoping defensively inside [that] we should be pretty good, and I would expect us to be one of the best rebounding teams around.”

WMU plays their first game of the boys’ basketball season tomorrow night when they travel to face Louisa-Muscatine.
