The Washington Police Department has launched a parking enforcement initiative aimed at improving public safety. The current initiative is focused mainly on vehicles parking the wrong direction, vehicles including trailers being stored on streets and public rights-of-way in violation of the city’s 24-hour parking ordinance, vehicles parked in restricted zones, and vehicles parked in a manner that blocks a public sidewalk. The Police Department will spend the next several weeks issuing warning notices that include a copy of the ordinance being violated. This increased effort is to help improve safety in the neighborhoods along with eliminating the storage of trailers and vehicles on the street, which may at times interfere with traffic flow, especially during winter snow removal operations. The current fine for a parking ticket is $25, however Snow Ban and Snow Emergency violations are $50. There is a $5 late fee if the ticket is not paid within 30-45 days and unpaid tickets after 90 days may result in a hold placed on the vehicle’s registration renewal.
