Two KCII area schools get together tonight for a Southeast Iowa Superconference boys and girls basketball doubleheader when Hillcrest Academy entertains Columbus. The Raven girls are 2-1 this year, after a 20 point loss to Highland on the road Tuesday 60-40 where Claire Withrow had 16 points. This year, the Ravens are scoring 56 points per game and giving up 44 while shooting 35% from the floor, 31% from distance and 48% at the line with 35 rebounds, 16 assists, 22 steals and 26 turnovers per game. Individually, Withrow’s 21 points per night leads, as does Delaney Shaw with 11 boards and Malia Yoder with six assists and six steals per game.
Columbus is 3-0 after wins over L-M, Lone Tree and North Cedar. The Wildcats were a 54-13 winner over the Knights Thursday. The ‘Cats score 47 per game and give up 29, shooting 26% from the floor, 17% from three and 35% at the line with 40 rebounds, nine assists, 22 steals and 23 turnovers per game. Individually, Ariana Vergara scores 12 per night to go with eight steals and three assists. Aracely Garza averages 10 rebounds. Columbus has won six-in-a-row in the series including 44-11 and 39-24 victories last season.
The Raven boys are 1-0 after a 78-39 win at Highland Tuesday where Kale Bailey, Seth Ours and Mason Bender all got to double figures on 16, 14 and 13 points respectively, as Hillcrest shot 52%, won rebounds by 13, had 21 steals, 16 assists and forced 29 turnovers.
Columbus is 1-1 coming into the night. They split games this week, falling to Lone Tree 72-46, but rebounding to beat North Cedar Thursday 57-51. Hillcrest has won 31 straight in this series, dating back to 2007. Action starts with the girls game tonight at 6p.m. At Hillcrest Academy.
