Two Kalona-area businesses are receiving grant funding through a program focused on the food supply chain. More than $5.2 million is being invested in 24 projects and supply chain improvements across Iowa through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Resilient Food Infrastructure grant program. The goal of the program is to build resilience in the middle of the food supply chain by developing and expanding markets for small farms and food businesses in the Hawkeye State.

The two Kalona-area recipients are the Kalona Creamery and Camp Creek Organic Produce.

The Kalona Creamery is receiving an RFSI Infrastructure grant of $478,282.10 with matching funding of $534,931.90. The company processes milk from 67 family-owned dairies and delivers products to retailers in Iowa and regionally. The grant will purchase and install dairy processing equipment to expand the company’s organic dairy products.

Camp Creek Organic Produce is receiving a $90,000 RFSI Equipment grant with $10,000 of matching funds. This project will purchase two delivery trucks for their food hub to replace vehicles that are over two decades old. The aim is to allow for more reliable deliveries and expand routes in central and southern Iowa.
