The Washington Demons dropped both of their home basketball battles with Grinnell last night. The Washington girls responded to a 20-14 halftime deficit with a 7-0 run to start the second half, and they would go back and forth with Grinnell down the stretch.
But a three-pointer by freshman Hope Dana with just over a minute to play put the Tigers up four, and they would fend off the Demons to win 34-31. Junior Adalyn Long scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Washington, while senior Kendall Hinrichsen added seven points as the Demons fall to 1-2.
The Washington boys trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter and were down nine to Grinnell at halftime, but it was the 7-0 run by the Tigers to begin the third quarter that put them in control, and the closest the Demons got the deficit would be nine in the second half of a 61-43 loss.
Senior Logan McDole led Washington by scoring 11 points, while junior Drew Conrad and sophomore Nic Stone had 10 each as the Demons start the season 0-2. Both Washington teams will look to bounce back in their first Southeast Conference games of the season later this evening when they host Keokuk.
