This weekend brought together some of the best high school wrestlers in southeast Iowa for the annual Willard Howell Invitational in Wapello, and a number of local grapplers walked away with some hardware.
That included WACO senior Louden Huisenga, who moved to 6-0 by winning the boys’ title at 190 pounds with three straight victories by fall. Gage Samo remained unbeaten and won a championship as well with a pin and a 10-2 major decision at 120 to help the Warriors finish sixth as a team.
Freshman Ian Maize continued his undefeated start to his career for WACO by pinning two opponents and defeating the other by technical knockout to take the crown at 106 lbs.
Sophomore teammate Braxton Stauffer was fifth at 165 for the Warriors and junior Deacon Bird finished sixth at 150, as did sophomore Tommy Unternahrer at 285.
Junior Jacob Libe led Sigourney-Keota with a second-place finish at 157 lbs. Senior teammate Brady Clark was third at 150, as was senior Owen Menke at 285, while freshman Dillon Menke took fifth at 138 and senior Jayden Thompson did the same at 190.
Sophomore Brycen Horras was sixth at 126 for SK, as were seniors Ashton Schwab and Zach Guffey at 175 and 215, respectively, on their way to finishing seventh in the team standings.
Freshman Cash Cole was runner-up for Highland at 113, while senior Isaac Kleese won the bronze medal at 215. Junior Brock Thomann finished fourth at 132 and freshman Aiden Yoder was sixth at 120 as the Huskies took eighth as a team.
On the girls’ side, Reanah Utterback remains perfect after the Sigourney-Keota senior won all three bouts via pin at 115 lbs and brought home another tournament championship. Freshman Karley Greiner nearly joined her with a title belt but was second at 170.
Kia Montgomery also finished fourth at 130 for SK, while fellow sophomore Sadie Clarahan was fifth at 125 and freshman Izzy McCullough was sixth at 100 lbs.
WACO’s Elyssa Graber suffered her first defeat of the season but still finished third at 105, while fellow seniors Rylee Rice and Athena Flores were fourth at 110 and 115, respectively.
Sophomore Olivia Magruder had Lone Tree’s best finish by taking silver at 135, while seniors Kaylee Rundlett and Sami Branson finished third at 145 and 235, respectively. Sophomore Carlee Sexton was sixth at 105 for the Lions, as was senior Alex Dautremont at 140.
Sophomore Jada Moats won bronze for Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union at 170, while senior Martiza Tovar was fifth at 105. Highland freshman Maiya Singbeil took third at 135.
