The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling team hosted a quadrangular of duals last night and came away with a 63-12 victory over the Highland Huskies. The Wildcats would suffer a 49-18 loss to Burlington Notre Dame and were beaten 62-17 by Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.
Columbus/WMU was led by junior Dakota Aney’s pair of wins by fall at 106 pounds, while junior Kason Dopler picked up a pin and also won a 5-2 decision at 175. Trevor Phillips won a 7-0 decision and earned a pin at 190 lbs for the Wildcats, while fellow junior Alex Venzor got a pin to win and also claimed an 8-7 decision at 144.
Senior Jacob Nelson won by fall at 120 lbs for Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union, as did sophomore Ronaldo Villegas at 215. ‘Cats senior Itai Zapiensz won a 6-0 decision at 285, while junior Bowen Thomson picked up a victory by technical knockout at 138 and sophomore Tayson Samuels won a 13-5 major decision at 132.
In addition to the loss to Columbus/WMU, Highland fell 78-5 to Notre Dame and 72-6 to EBF. Mason Lavely won twice for the Huskies, picking up a pin and a TKO at 126 lbs, while fellow freshman Jack Cave also got a pin at 106.
While Highland next wrestles this weekend at the Springville Invitational, Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union will be at Colfax-Mingo on Saturday.
