The Washington Demons dropped their first conference dual of the boys’ wrestling season last night, falling 57-21 at Fairfield. Washington took a 9-0 lead on the scoreboard after Aaron Boone won by fall at 138 pounds and fellow senior Jude Carter picked up a 4-1 sudden victory in overtime at 144.
But Fairfield would win the next six bouts to jump in front 33-9, and even after junior Rudy Wolfe won by pin for the Demons at 285 lbs, they would not be able to come all the way back, with senior Nate Edmonds’ pin at 120 the only points they would get the rest of the night.
The Washington girls would produce a pair of winners at Fairfield. Senior Peggy Miller picked up a pin at 145 lbs, while sophomore Ryha Wellington won a 6-2 decision at 140.
Despite their first Southeast Conference defeat, the Washington boys are still 9-3 in team duals this season. The Demons will next wrestle this weekend at the Mount Vernon Invitational, while the girls’ team is off until the next conference meet this coming Thursday against Keokuk.
