The Washington Demons swept a home basketball doubleheader with their conference rivals from Fairfield Friday night, as the girls topped the Trojans 44-33 and the boys won 54-47.
The Washington girls trailed early but took a 7-6 lead after a low-scoring opening quarter, then junior Oaklee Sobaski brought the offense to life by hitting four three-point shots in the second period alone to power the Demons to a 26-23 lead by halftime, one they would keep the rest of the way after they started the second half with an 8-0 run.
Sobaski finished with a career-high 18 points scored to lead Washington, while senior Kendall Hinrichsen hit a trio of triples as well to finish with nine points and help the Demons improve to 1-1 in the Southeast Conference and 2-4 overall. After the game, head coach Shannon Rugg told KCII Sports his team responded well to a slow start.
“Obviously, Oaklee knocking some shots down there in the second quarter kept us in the game and got us a little bit of a lead,” Rugg said. “We just looked a little more calm on the offense end and really shared the ball a lot better tonight.”
The Washington boys also started slow, trailing 9-6 after a quarter of play and finding themselves down 24-18 at halftime. The deficit grew as large as seven points in the third period, but a 15-6 run put the Demons ahead 36-34 going into the final quarter, and four three-pointers in the final eight minutes helped them put the win away.
Drew Conrad hit two of those treys, part of four total second-half threes the junior hit on his way to scoring 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half for the Demons.
Sophomore Nic Stone also hit three three-pointers and had 13 points, while senior Logan McDole added 12 to help Washington start conference play 2-0. After the game, head coach Collin Stark told KCII Sports his team showed resiliency and mental fortitude to come back from a tough first half.
“When calls aren’t going your way, or you think they should be going a different way,” Stark said, “[and] it’s easier said than done, you’ve got to just do the things that you can control, and I thought our kids did well with understanding that.”
While the girls’ team next heads to West Liberty on Tuesday, the 2-3 Demon boys take on Oskaloosa in their next game. You can catch Washington taking on Osky Tuesday night on 106.1 FM KCII starting with pregame coverage at 5:30.
