The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls and boys basketball teams stayed perfect on the young season Tuesday, blasting the Wilton Beavers in both ends of a River Valley Conference doubleheader at Tim Grady Gymnasium. The Golden Hawk girls got their win by more than 60, 93-32. The Hawks led 18-9 after one, then put up 27 in the second quarter for a 45-20 advantage at half and scored 30 in the third to enact a running clock and push the margin to 75-26 going to the fourth. Mid-Prairie dominated every phase, taking turnovers 30-9, rebounding 40-26, dishing out 25 assists, 21 steals and hitting 10 threes as a team. Five Golden Hawks got to double figures, Brylee Gearhart had a 14 point 11 rebound double double, Callie Huber had 18 points, Brooklyn Schneider and , Morgyn Bender 15 each and Jeorgia Evans 10. Nine total Mid-Prairie players scored. The Golden Hawks of the Game Brooklyn Schneider and Callie Huber spoke live on the KCII Postgame Show about the win.
Huber said, “Boxing out and getting good position was important. The guards gave me good passes. Tessa (Bombei) had a few where she was driving the lane and dumped it off to me for easy layups. Scoring and winning by this much, it’s really great! It makes it hard on the defense because they can’t focus in on one player specifically.”
Schneider continued, “We were focused on bringing the intensity the whole game. We went after loose balls the whole time. Wings were open for shots in the corners and we knocked them down. It’s great to have so many girls that are good at defense, offense, and we get good rebounding. We share the ball well and we take good looks.”
Wilton’s Kinsey Drake had 12 points to lead. Mid-Prairie is now 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference. Wilton remains winless.
The Mid-Prairie boys were also wire-to-wire winners over Wilton Tuesday 75-56. The Hawks were up 22-9 after one and 45-25 at half. They would keep that margin around 20 points the rest of the night, holding the Beavers at bay. Mid-Prairie won turnovers 23-16 and the glass by 14. The Golden Hawk duo of Bryce Henry and Brady Weber led, Henry going for 26, his third straight game of 25 or more and Weber finished with 20. Golden Hawk of the Game Landon Kos joined the KCII Postgame Show to talk about the team performance through three games and the work the Golden Hawk front line is doing on defense and in the paint.
Kos said, “We knew we had to play more physical than them. If you attack them you can use that to get offensive rebounds and transition was big. On defense, we played off the ball a little bit and that gave extra help defense in the lane. Everyone is fearless out there. We’re aggressive. We’re going to attack the ball and try to get every single rebound. Just the amount of shooters on this team is insane! Being able to trust people to hit a three, or hit you with a pass. Overall, our game fits so well together and that’s why we’re succeeding!”
Oaklan Jirak led Wilton with 24. The Golden Hawk boys are 5-0, 3-0 in conference and Wilton remains winless. The Hawks are back on the floor Friday when they travel to Durant for the final pre-Christmas contest, taking on the Wildcats. You can hear that doubleheader live on KCII.
