The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team is back on the mat tonight when they travel to Solon for a double dual against Iowa City West and the home Spartans.

The Hawks are 4-2 in duals this season, after dropping two of three on Senior Night Monday in Wellman, beating Durant, but falling to Wilton and Anamosa. The Golden Hawks have two ranked wrestlers in their line-up according to the latest Class 1A poll from Iawrestle.com with Ashlee Farrier No. 6 at 130lbs and Ellie Callahan No. 10 at 170lbs. Austyn Sexton has the team lead with 14 wins this season. Gabby Gingerich, Farrier and Cassie Trimpe all have double digit wins with Ruby Miller, Emmerson Moore, Mardie Berry and Ellie Callahan all over .500.

Iowa City West is 2-3 in duals this year. They fell in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual Monday to Linn-Mar. On the season, the Women of Troy are led by Trinity Myers with 16 wins at 135lbs followed by Deanna Varela 13-7 at 235lbs. Mid-Prairie beat West in 2022 54-6.

Solon is 3-0 in duals this season including a 42-33 win over Williamsburg last week. The Lady Spartans are ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 1A team dual rankings issued by Iawrestle.com, with three members of their lineup in the individual poll including Kara VeDepo No. 1 at 105lbs, McKenna Rogers No. 2 at 110lbs and Olivia Bonnema No. 6 at 145lbs. VeDepo is the team leader with 16 victories. Rogers has 14 wins and Jadlyn Huynh with 10. The Golden Hawks beat the Spartans head to head in 2023 54-30. Golden Hawk head coach Brock Moore spoke with KCII Sports on Senior Night Monday about his team’s progress this season.

Moore said, “It’s fun to watch our young wrestlers grow. Right now, our 10, 20, and 25 are all cutting to get to a different weight class, and that’s a tough thing to be doing that and then find the energy and focus to come out and compete at a high level. I feel like our girls are working hard and doing what they need to. Those dual wins will start to happen.”

Action starts tonight at 5:30p.m. At Solon High School.
