A bridge on the south end of Wellman will soon be replaced. The City of Wellman and the Washington County Engineer’s Office have announced they will begin the process of building the new bridge this month. They will close 9th Avenue on January 13th, so that they can begin building the new bridge. However, they did announce that weather conditions could affect the start date. This project was originally approved in March of 2022 and will be constructed by Iowa Bridge and Culvert for $904,986. They also revealed that the new bridge will not have any weight restrictions.
The existing bridge was first built in 1928 with it being widened by the Iowa DOT in 1964. The new bridge will be about 110 feet long.
Because there will be no bridge during this time,a detour will go from Ginkgo Avenue (W38) to 170th street (G26) Highway 1 North to Highway 22, which will lead to Wellman.
