The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling team earned fourth place overall Saturday at the Eddyville Duals as part of a weekend filled with dual competition.

After the Wildcats fell 45-33 to Des Moines East, they knocked off North Mahaska 44-31. Unfortunately, they would wrap up pool play by losing 67-12 to Atlantic and would suffer a 50-27 defeat to Creston in the third-place dual.

Columbus/WMU was led by Kason Dopler, who won four times on the day at 175 pounds, twice by fall and twice by decision. Senior Riley Kaalberg picked up three pins at 165 lbs, as did junior Trevor Phillips at 190.

The Wildcats got a pair of pins each from junior Dakota Aney at 106 and senior Jacob Nelson at 120, while junior Alex Venzor won a 13-6 decision to go with a pin at 144. Other ‘Cats with pins to win were sophomore Justin Knipfer at 113 and seniors Markel and Itai Zapiensz at 285.

The WACO Warriors came away with a pair of team victories Saturday while finishing fifth overall at the BGM Holiday Duals in Brooklyn. WACO defeated Baxter 36-24 and knocked off the hosts from BGM 36-30, but the Warriors fell to Louisa-Muscatine 42-36 before also losing 48-27 to Moravia and 65-12 to South Tama.

WACO was paced by senior Gage Samo, who continued his undefeated season by winning all five of his bouts at 126 lbs and getting four victories by fall. Senior Louden Huisenga also remained unbeaten with two pins and one win by technical knockout at 215, while freshman Ian Maize improved to 16-1 with a pair of pins at 106.

Senior Lane Bachman got a pin to win for the Warriors at 132, as did sophomore Brawk Stern at 215, while junior Harley Larimore won a 7-2 decision at 175.

The Highland Huskies would not have the same luck, dropping all five of their team competitions Saturday at the Lions’ Den Duals in Lisbon. Highland lost to AC/GC 64-18; was edged out by Clayton Ridge 42-38; fell to Cedar Rapids Washington 54-30; was beaten by Mount Vernon 66-12; and was defeated by the hosts Lisbon 72-6.

Freshman Caleb Wheeler won twice by pin at 144 lbs for the Huskies, while sophomores Tyler Pierson and Gauge Richardson had victories by fall at 132 and 157, respectively.

Rocky Hamilton won a 7-0 decision at 144, while Highland got pins to win from fellow freshmen Cash Cole at 113, Aiden Yoder at 120 and Mason Lavely at 126. Junior Brock Thomann added a technical knockout for the Huskies at 132.
