Both Sigourney Savage basketball teams were on the wrong end of close games Friday night at Lynnville-Sully. The Sigourney girls fell behind by 12 points at the end of the first quarter and were down 32-13 at halftime, but they found a way to get back in the game.

After trimming the margin to 15 points heading into the final period, the Savages finished the game on a 22-9 run and nearly completed a crazy comeback. But, ultimately, the 13th-ranked team in Class 2A held on to win 56-54.

Senior forward Josephine Moore spearheaded the near-comeback with 30 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Freshman Brynn Clarahan added 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, but it was not quite enough to keep Sigourney from falling to 4-2 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 5-3 overall.

The Savage boys also faced a halftime deficit and trailed 45-37 at the end of the third quarter. Down the stretch, Sigourney managed to tie the game, but a buzzer-beating put-back on an offensive rebound would deliver Lynnville-Sully the 55-53 victory.

Senior Isaac Bruns led the Savages with 14 points and seven rebounds, while junior Brayden Wood hit three three-pointers on his way to 13 points. Sophomore Ike Molyneux added 11 points and five assists as Sigourney falls to 4-3, including a 3-3 record in conference play. Both Savage squads play again this evening at North Mahaska.
