The Lions of Lone Tree were dominant in both ends of a SEISC North doubleheader with rival Highland Tuesday in an Area Game of the Week sweep of the Huskies.
The action began with the girls game, and Lone Tree made it clear they had revenge on their minds from the upset loss earlier in the season to the Huskies. The Lady Lions used a 21-1 run to begin the game en route to outscoring Highland 30-5 in the first quarter behind 16 points from junior Finley Jacque, as well as six baskets from beyond the arc. Lone Tree would again hold Highland to just five points in the second quarter, as they stretched their lead to 33 by halftime. The Lady Lions kept the pressure on in the second half, allowing just 14 Highland points the rest of the game to capture their revenge by a final of 67-24.
Unofficially, Lone Tree won turnovers 25-8, but was outrebounded by three. Jacque led the way with her 23 points, while senior Vivian Zaruba had 19. Katie Herrig led the Huskies with just seven points.
After the game, victorious head coach of the Lady Lions, Ryan Shelman, joined KCII Sports to discuss the momentous win. “It was amazing to see our girls just come out and get after it defensively. To hold Kamryn Fink to four points the entire game just shows us what our defensive intensity is capable of in doing,” Shelman said.
The boys game largely followed the same script, with Lone Tree hopping out to an early 14-point lead that dwindled to eight by the end of the first frame. However, the Lions used an 8-0 run in the second period to stretch the lead back to 15 by halftime. From there, the Lions would outscore their rival Huskies 41-32 to nab the win by a final of 77-53.
Unofficially, Lone Tree was outrebounded 29-23, but won the turnover battle by 14. Three Lions scored at least 19 in the win, including Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game Reece Holbrook with 26, Emmett Burke with 20 and Cade Willoz with 19. Holbrook joined KCII Sports live on the Area Game of the Week postgame show following the win. “Hopefully we carry it into the next game and keep playing,” Holbrook said.
Also following their victory, Lone Tree Head Coach Jonathan Chaney spoke with KCII Sports to break down their winning performance. “We really got into a good flow, and we would move the ball around. It seemed like when everybody would touch it on our team, good things were happening,” Chaney said.
The Lone Tree boys and girls improve their records to 3-6 and 9-2 overall respectively ahead of Friday’s road games in Columbus, while the Highland boys and girls fall to 1-7 and 7-4 overall, respectively. The Area Game of the Week will follow the Huskies back to Riverside on Thursday for their non-conference matchup with English Valleys.
