A man has been sentenced to 10 years of incarceration related to a sex abuse crime that occurred in Jefferson County in 2016. According to the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, Adam Joseph McKinney was convicted of enticing a child under 13 years of age, a Class C felony, and on January 6th was sentenced in Iowa District Court. McKinney pled guilty to perpetrating sexually motivated acts upon his adopted daughter. The victim was six-years old at the time.

A charge of sexual abuse in the second degree was dismissed.

In a statement, Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding explained, “This case was complicated by the significant passage of time between the criminal conduct and the report of the crime, coupled with the extremely young age of the victim at the time of the offense. The fact that a case this old was able to be brought to criminal charge, conviction and sentence is a testament to the diligence of the investigation, along with the strength of the minor victim who was willing to come forward 8 years after the abuse to ensure justice was done.”

During his 10-year sentence, McKinney is required to undergo sexual offender treatment. He will be subject to lifetime sex offender monitoring.

The Fairfield Police Department investigated the case, and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, the Roswell New Mexico Police Department, and the New Mexico Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office assisted with the investigation.
