Kalona is doing something special for veterans in 2025. Banners honoring veterans will be mounted on light poles starting in May. Applications are now available. The cost for a banner will be $150 and it will be hung on the light poles for two years. They will be hung up from May until November both this year and in 2026.

Once December of 2026 hits, the banners will be given to each applicant for their own personal use. CBI Bank & Trust and KCTC (Kalona Cooperative Technology Company) are donating the brackets.

Tonia Poole, the Executive Director of the Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce, explained the project, “So we are taking applications right now for veteran banners that are going to be hung in the downtown Kalona area. We have 30 banners available. They are double sided canvas 5-foot banners that are going to be on light poles throughout Kalona. Part of B Ave leading into downtown and 4 and 6th street leading up to the Sharon Hill Cemetery“.

She shared how people can sign up, “ We have applications available at the chamber office. They are also available on our website. There is a page specifically for the veteran banners, so you can download it and print it off right there. And then you can mail them or drop them off at our office. They can be veterans currently serving or have served in the past, living or deceased. All that information is on the applications”.

Applications are due by February 3rd.
