The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Alburnett Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Pirates. The Golden Hawk girls scored a 60-34 victory. Things were tied at 15 after the first quarter but the Hawks turned up the heat with their defense in the second, not allowing a field goal for the entire frame, outscoring the Pirates 11-1 to build a 26-16 halftime lead. The Mid-Prairie offense also got hot in the third, putting up 25 in the quarter to lead 51-28 after three. Golden Hawk head coach Danny Hershberger talked with KCII Sports about his keys to the win.

Hershberger said, “The focus in the second quarter was making sure that we closed out on shooters. The girls stepped up and picked up the intensity defensively. We came out with some urgency on offense in the second half, we hit a couple of threes in our first two or three possessions to extend the lead. We were able to get a few turnovers in our press and get some transition points. We did a much better job of getting the ball inside Brylee (Gearhart) and Callie (Huber) in the second half. Jeorgia Evans does a great job of playing great defense, finding ways to get deflections and steals, then is able to use her athletic ability to get down the court and get some layups. Callie (Huber) scored all 11 of her points in the second half. Katelyn (Harland’s) assists were huge for us. Myli (Hershberger) was huge for us getting tough offensive and defensive rebounds and in the first quarter Brooklyn Schneider really carried us on offense.”

The Hawks hit seven threes, grabbed 52 rebounds, dished out 19 assists and had 14 steals as a team. Jeorgia Evans led the offense with 12 points. Callie Huber added 11 with a team high nine boards. Katelyn Harland had six assists. Mid-Prairie improves to 8-1 on the season.

The Golden Hawk boys dropped their first contest of the year Thursday 55-44. Mid-Prairie had a slim 16-13 lead after one and held that margin at 23-20 at half. The Pirates found another gear in the second half, outscoring Mid-Prairie 35-21 the rest of the way. Matthew Neighbor led Alburnett with 19 points and Laken Caves had 11. KCII Athlete of the Week Bryce Henry led Mid-Prairie with 24 points, his seventh straight game with 20 or more. The Hawks are now 8-1 overall.
