Both Sigourney Savage basketball teams finished off their weeks with home victories over BGM and Pekin. The Sigourney girls built on their four-point lead over BGM in the first quarter with a 14-8 run to take a 32-22 lead into halftime, then doubled up the Bears in the third quarter Friday to push the advantage to 56-34 on their way to a 71-55 win.
Senior Josephine Moore had game highs of 23 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Savages, while sophomore Bailey Gretter added 16 points and six rebounds and freshman Brynn Clarahan put up 13 points, six assists and three steals. Senior McKinley Chittick added 12 points on four three-point shots.
Sigourney came back the next day and broke up a tie game with Pekin by finishing the first half on a 19-6 run and grabbing a 30-17 lead. The Savages kept on rolling with a 23-10 run to open the third period and would cruise from there in a 63-42 win.
Clarahan was brilliant for Sigourney, piling up 26 points, eight assists and a whopping nine steals while also hitting four three-pointers. Moore had 17 points and eight boards as the Savages improve to 7-4 overall, including a 5-3 record in the South Iowa Cedar League.
The Sigourney boys doubled up BGM 20-10 to start things Friday night, but it their was 17-8 run after leading 40-28 at the half that put the Savages in total control on their way to winning 75-55.
Senior Isaac Bruns led Sigourney with a game-high 23 points, while junior John Berg dominated in the paint with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Junior Solon Yates hit a trio of triples and scored 13 points.
The Savages got off to a slower start Saturday against Pekin, but a 17-9 run going into the locker room put them up 28-26, and a 22-11 run to start the second half gave the home team the reins en route to a 59-49 victory.
Sophomore Ike Molyneux paced Sigourney with 15 points and added seven rebounds and three steals, while Berg had another double-double with 14 points, 16 boards, three steals and three blocked shots.
Bruns added 12 points and two blocks as the Savages raise their record to 6-4, including a 4-4 mark in conference play. Both Sigourney squads will play Tuesday at home against Colfax-Mingo, with the boys’ team back in action before then against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tonight.
