Both WACO Warrior teams continued their excellent seasons on the basketball hardwood with Saturday wins over their rivals from New London.

The WACO girls jumped out to a 14-2 lead and nearly doubled that advantage to 26-6 on their way to a 43-26 victory. Sophomore Brenna Graber knocked down three three-point baskets on her way to a game-high 17 points for the Warriors, who win a seventh straight game to improve to 9-3.

The WACO boys’ team only led 26-22 at halftime against winless New London, but a 23-6 run to start the third quarter put them in control of what would be a 70-39 victory. 22 points from junior Christian Stacy led the way, while senior Isaac Rich had 17 to help the Warriors raise their record to 9-2.

Winfield-Mount Union basketball would not have the same luck in a doubleheader with Holy Trinity Catholic. The WMU boys hung tough with the sixth-ranked team in the state in Class 1A, but a four-point halftime deficit became 46-35 going into the final quarter, and they could not rally in a 63-48 defeat.

Senior Jake Edwards had 14 points, eight assists and six steals to lead the Wolves, who have a string of back-to-back wins snapped as they fall to 7-5.

The Winfield-Mount Union girls fell behind 31-2 after a half of play and made a spirited effort to claw back, but Holy Trinity Catholic would ultimately win 37-22. The loss drops the Wolves to 2-12.

While both WACO teams next play Tuesday at Pekin, both WMU squads are next in action tomorrow night against Lone Tree. You can catch the Wolves taking on the Lions in the KCII Area Game of the Week starting with pregame coverage streaming on KCIIradio.com tomorrow evening at 5:30.
