Lone Tree Lions wrestler Brock Nebergall brought home a championship from this year’s Corky Stuart Invitational at BGM High School in Brooklyn. The sophomore won the title in the 120-pound weight class Saturday after winning all four of his bouts, three times by fall.
Sophomore Cole Walmsley took fourth place for Lone Tree at 113 lbs, as did seniors Clemens Swaink and Brody Magruder at 144 and 165, respectively. Meanwhile, Ace Swaink finished seventh for the Lions at 138, as did fellow freshman Trenton McKean at 106.
Lone Tree was coming off a quadrangular of duals Thursday at Springville. The Lions defeated the hosting Orioles 42-18 but came up just short to Maquoketa Valley 40-36 and fell to North Linn 71-12.
Nebergall won once by fall at 120 for Lone Tree, as did Magruder at 165 and Ace Swaink at 138, while the Lions also got a pin to win from freshman Tate Nelson at 285 lbs.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union and Sigourney-Keota boys’ wrestling teams took part in the two-day Ottumwa Invitational this weekend. Kason Dopler had the best finish for Columbus/WMU by taking second place at 175 lbs.
The junior won all three of his bouts Friday, twice by technical knockout and once by a 3-0 decision, to earn the top seed in Pool A. After getting a pin in the quarterfinals the next day, Dopler claimed a 3-2 decision to reach the championship round, but he would suffer a loss by TKO in the finals to drop his otherwise sterling record to 22-5.
Senior Jacob Nelson also brought home a medal for the Wildcats by finishing fifth at 120, while junior teammate Dakota Aney was sixth at 106 and senior Markel Zapiensz was eighth at 285.
Senior Jayden Thompson led Sigourney-Keota by claiming fourth at 190 lbs, while juniors Jacob Libe and Owen Menke were seventh at 150 and 285, respectively.
