We have a big time matchup in the Super Conference North as Winfield-Mt Union takes on Lone Tree in a Tuesday double header. The girls game will be first as tip off will be at 6 PM with the KCII Sports pregame show starting at 5:30 PM. The boys game will be after the girls game, which will start at 7:30 PM.
For the girls side, Winfield is 2-12 and 1-8 in the conference. WMU fell to Louisa Muscatine 48-37 on Friday. The wolves have lost 11 in a row and are hoping to get a win over the Lions. This series dates back to 2006 with Winfield-Mt Union leading 18-16. The last time they played was in December and Lone Tree won convincingly 63-18. LT has dominated the series as of late winning the last four all by more than 20 points. On the season, the Wolves are led by Kynlee Buffington averaging 14 points a night. She also averages a double double with 11 boards per night. Madisen Kellogg is second on the team as she averages 10 points a contest, while shooting 32% from the field. On the season, they are averaging 36 points a game, which is towards the bottom of the conference. Along with points, they are averaging 31.6 boards per night 9 assists, 8 steals per game and shooting 29% from the field. At the 3 point line, they are shooting 19%. In their loss to Louisa Muscantine, the Wolves were led by Knylee Buffington,who dropped 18 points and 7 boards. Madison Kellogg had 13 points and assisted her teammates twice.
Mendy McCreight spoke with KCII Sports on this week’s edition of coaches corner. “Yea we just adjusted to our offense. We wanted to space out some more so we could get a more looks inside. They did a pretty job in the first quarter shutting the middle down. So we spread ourselves out and we knew who to pass the ball around to, so we could hit her in the middle when she was open.”
For the other side, Lone Tree is 8-4 overall and 7-3 in the conference. They are averaging 55.9 points per game with a field goal percentage of 34.5%. A three-point percentage of 22.9%. They are grabbing 36.0 rebounds per game along with 15.8 assists, 15.8 steals, and 3.4 blocks per game. Finley Jacque leads the team with 15.6 PPG, shooting 45.7% from the field and contributing 3.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. Cate Sexton adds 9.9 PPG and 5.4 rebounds per game, while Vivian Zaruba and Ava Christofferson both contribute 8.8 PPG.
Lone Tree Head Girls Basketball coach, Ryan Shelman was on the KCII Sports on this week’s edition of the coaches corner. He was happy about his team’s defensive effort. “Probably are defensive effort. It was just amazing to see our girls come out and get after it defensively. To hold Kamryn Fink to 4 points in the entire game. It just shows us what our defensive intensity is capable of. It’s just amazing to see our girls with that defensive intensity”.
On the boys side, WMU is 7-5 overall and 7-2 in the Super Conference North. The Wolves are averaging 52.8 points per game. They are led by Jake Edwards who leads the team in scoring with 18.1 PPG, shooting 45.8% from the field and adding 4.8 assists and 4.6 steals per game. Lane Genkinger contributes 7.8 PPG with a team-high 51.2% shooting and 4.5 boards per game. Max Edwards averages 8.4 PPG and leads the team in boards with 5.3 RPG.
Clay Edwards joined KCII Sports Coaches Corner to talk about his team. He was asked about what impressed him about his team in their last win.”I think we got out early and forced a lot of turnovers. Got some easy run outs and were finishing well in the first half. Just our ability to jump out early, which we haven’t done a whole lot this year. Getting out on top of them and playing with a lead was nice”.
Lone Tree boys are hoping to pull the upset. They are 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the conference. They are coming off a loss to Columbus in their last game. They are led by Emmet Burke, who is averaging 16.8 points per game, which is top 5 in the conference. He is joined by Reece Holbrook, who is scoring 12.8 points a night. In rebounds, Holbrook, who also leads the team in rebounding at 6 a night. For the team, they are scoring 57 points a game, shooting 44% from the field, 56% from the charity strike, 30% at the three point line and 8 steals per game.
Lone Tree boys head basketball coach, Jonathan Chaney was on the KCII Radio Coaches Corner to talk about his team’s loss to Columbus. “I would say our preparations. I thought our preparation was good going into this game. We had some really quality practices this week, but everything that we did seemed like it kind of went out the window once the game started. It looked like Columbus had a pretty good defensive plan to kind of limit Emmet Burke as much as they could. I would definitely appalled the way we did prepare, it just a matter of applying and executing”.
