Life saving measures were taken at the Highland High School Girls Wrestling tournament that was held Friday. In a statement from Highland Superintendent Ken Crawford, he explains, “An individual from Wilton went into cardiac arrest. We are very thankful to the people in the stands that assisted in helping this individual through their episode which ended positively. A huge thank you goes out to our school nurse, Cindy Peiffer, and our trainer out of the University of Iowa, Todd Sorenson. Mrs. Peiffer has effectively trained all of our staff and students on where the AED device is located and how to use it. Mr. Sorensen had an AED device with him as well and never hesitated in his actions to help the distressed individual. There were also many people at the tournament with CPR training and everyone worked as a team to ensure the survival of the individual. The EMTs from Riverside are also to be thanked for their quick arrival and help with this situation.” The individual was resuscitated and was coherent by the time the ambulance arrived, and they were transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in stable condition. Due to the events, the tournament director and referees decided to end the tournament early.
