The Washington Community School District will be moving to proficiency scales for grading next school year. Proficiency scales help define students’ current level and the level they need to reach to move forward with their education. Proficiency scales list learning goals and different difficulty levels. Low scores usually indicate limited understanding, while high scores show mastery of a subject. Superintendent Willie Stone spoke more on the subject, “During the curriculum report, Ms Beenblossom presented on the use of proficiency scales K-12 next year. So that is something that will be district-wide. The thing that normally gets asked is what will happen at the High School? We will still have A,B,C,D, and F, we will still have letter grades, what goes into making up those letter grades will be the discussion point.” The district will be holding community meetings to discuss the change for the district in the future.
