The Washington Community School District has been impacted by a data breach with a student information website. The district utilizes PowerSchool, the provider of the software that they use to store certain student and teacher information. In a letter sent by Washington Superintendent Willie Stone to district parents the situation was explained, “According to PowerSchool, an unauthorized third-party gained access to PowerSchool’s platform and was able to download this information in late December 2024 by leveraging a compromised user credential. PowerSchool has unfortunately confirmed that data belonging to students and teachers within our district, and across the country, was impacted as a result of this incident. PowerSchool has confirmed that some personally identifiable information (PII), such as social security numbers, was impacted. PowerSchool has confirmed the incident is now contained.” Stone goes on in the letter to state that the district is working to evaluate the information breach, and will be working alongside PowerSchool to provide impacted individuals with resources to help protect themselves. The district will provide updates on the situation as they become available.
