Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ wrestling came away with a team victory at the Mike Halupnick Big Red Invitational in Centerville, finishing with a score of 341 points Saturday that was more than 20 better than second-place Corydon Wayne.

Senior Jacob Nelson helped lead the Wildcats to a top finish by taking second place at 120 pounds. After winning twice by fall and once by a 5-1 decision in the group stage, Nelson pinned his next two opponents to reach the finals, where he would drop a 3-1 decision in his only loss of the weekend.

Riley Kaalberg very nearly won a title for Columbus/WMU as well. The senior won twice by pin and once by a 4-1 decision in the group stage at 165 lbs before pinning his way to the finals, but he would lose there by fall.

Kason Dopler would finish third for the Wildcats at 175 lbs, as would fellow juniors Dakota Aney at 106 and Trevor Phillips at 190, while senior Itai Zapiensz and junior Alex Venzor were fourth at 285 and 144, respectively.

Senior Markel Zapiensz finished fifth for Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union at 215 lbs, as did junior Bowen Thomson at 138 and sophomore Justin Knipfer at 113, while junior Jaiden Beeding was eighth at 131.

Sigourney-Keota took part in the Hudson Invitational this weekend and would end up sixth as a team. Senior Brady Clark led the squad with a runner-up finish at 150 lbs, reaching the finals with a pin and a 12-4 major decision but getting pinned in the title bout.

Senior Ashton Schwab finished third for SK at 165, as did juniors Jacob Libe at 157 and Owen Menke at 285. Senior Zach Guffey and freshman Dillon Menke were fourth at 215 and 144, respectively, while Dawson Meyer took sixth at 138, as did fellow senior Jayden Thompson at 190.
