The Highland Huskies won a pair of boys’ wrestling duals last night in Mediapolis, defeating New London 43-21 after edging out the hosting Bulldogs 39-35. A pair of sophomores led Highland by winning twice, as Tyler Pierson got a victory by fall while also winning a 17-4 major decision at 138 pounds.
Gauge Richardson also had a pin to go with a 17-9 major decision at 157, while freshman Rocky Hamilton claimed a 15-9 decision at 144. Freshman Cash Cole won by technical knockout at 113 lbs, while the Huskies also got pins to win from junior Brock Thomann at 126, sophomore Jose Ramirez at 190 and freshman Caleb Wheeler at 150.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ team would also sweep a duals triangular yesterday at Pekin. The Wildcats shut out the hosting Panthers 74-0 after beating Louisa-Muscatine 57-22.
Senior Riley Kaalberg won twice by pin at 165 lbs for Columbus/WMU, while junior Tyson Kaalberg added a TKO to a pin at 157. Freshman Elias Gonzalez Bravo also won by technical knockout at 113, while Bowen Thomson eeked out an 11-10 decision at 138 and fellow junior Alex Venzor won a 13-4 major decision at 144.
Also getting pins for the Wildcats were freshman Dante Orozco at 126 lbs; Kason Dopler at 175; fellow junior Trevor Phillips at 190; and seniors Jacob Nelson and Itai Zapiensz at 120 and 285, respectively.
While Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union hosts a duals tournament this weekend, Highland heads to the Kurt Hinschberger Invitational in Belle Plaine tomorrow.
