waco-sigourney

On Thursday night, WACO hosted Sigourney in a class 1A double header. Both WACO`s and Sigourney teams all had winning records. The girls game tipped off to start the night. The girls game was a close one to start. At the end of the first quarter, they were both nodded up at 11. However, in the second the Savages turned it up and forced 5 turnovers just in the second quarter. Going into halftime, the Savages led 33-20. In the third, the Savages continued turning up the heat by outscoring the Warriors 18-7 to take a 51-27 lead going into the final quarter. In the fourth, the Savages scored 13 to finish the game with a rout over the Warriors 64-42. The Savages forced 18 turnovers. They also won the rebounding battle, 29-25. With the win, the Savages go to 12-4 and remain 8-3 in the South Iowa Cedar East conference. Leading the way for the Savages was Josephine Moore who scored 22 points in the win. McKinley Chittick scored 12 points.

McKinley Chittick joined KCII Sports after the win. “It was a team effort and we just fed off everyone’s energy. It was a great win. I was coming into the game knowing to play good defense and I got into a little bit of foul trouble. I know I needed to convert on offense, so that’s what I did. Our coach (Kaylee Webber) told us to just keep pushing, run the floor, run them out of the gym, just keep everything flowing well. I think we feed off everyone’s energy really well. If someone makes a three, we convert that on defense and force turnovers, so energy is a big thing for us”.

WACO falls to 11-5 and remains 8-2 in the Super conference North. Before Thursday night, WACO had won the last two meetings. This was Sigourney’s first win over WACO in three years. The Warriors were led by Brenna Graber who scored 10 points.

In the boys game, Sigourney fell to WACCO 62-49. Before Thursday night’s game, Sigourney had a six game winning streak dating all the way back to January 10th. Senior Issac Bruns scored 15 points. The Savages are now 10-5 and 7-4 in the SICL.

WACO won their third straight game. WACCO got off to a great start leading 23-5 late in the first quarter. Christian Stacy dropped 15 points in the first quarter alone. Late in the first, Sigourney had a 9-0 run going into the second. The Savages would continue on their run early in the first quarter and trim the Warriors lead to just one. WACO would only score two points in the second quarter, but kept the lead 25-24 going into the break. In the third, WACO would have another run by scoring 13  to keep their lead at one 38-37 . In the fourth, WACO would score 24 and seal the win by knocking down some free throws. WACO and Sigourney did not turn the ball over very much as both teams combined for 18 turnovers. The Savages turned the ball over 10 times, whereas the Warriors had eight. The rebounding was pretty close, but Sigourney won 35-30. The Warriors were led by Christian Stacy, who had a career night with 41 points. He did however, get a technical in the second by saying something that the ref was not pleased with.

After the win, Holden Hughes came on the KCII Postgame show to talk about their gameplan vs Sigourney.”Our goal was to get all the rebounds and don’t let them get easy buckets from the inside and make them work it from the outside. Get it to the inside, score the ball and finish. I heard the number one team in the state for rebounds was coming here and wanted to stop it.”

The docket for both teams look like this. Sigourney goes back home and will play Highland on Monday. For WACO, they play Hillcrest on Friday, which will be part of the KCII Area game of the week.
